How I Teach
There are three core principles in my teaching philosophy…
1) Liberation Pedagogy
I help students to actively partner me in creating and articulating knowledge in the classroom and eventually to effect change in their spheres of influence. Educators do not possess a monopoly on knowledge within the classroom. Every student has valuable knowledge and experience that they can contribute. This concept was written about by Paulo Freire (1968).
2) Authentic learning
I challenge my students to tackle real-world challenges through in-class activities, assignments, and projects that are designed to produce mastery of both content knowledge and development of soft skills such as confidence, critical thinking, communication, and resilience in the face of challenges. I believe that this active process produces deeper and more long-term growth.
3) Collaborative learning
I create the conditions for my students to work together and learn from one another. This enriches and broadens their learning experience and provides a platform to practise forming and articulating their opinions, as well as listening to those of others—essential social skills for their future careers.
