Ian Chan
Principle Investigator
Ian is interested in animal behaviour, how they see the world, and how they used their colour patterns to communicate to other animals around them. He started working on marine animals but has branched out to study terrestrial organisms such as butterflies and tree kangaroos.
In addition, he is passionate about conservation, sustainability and education and also engages in research in these areas.
Shannon Chang
Honours Student (AY24/25)
Shannon will be joining the lab in Aug 2024 to work on the colour patterns of sea squirts. She will be co-supervised by Prof Peter Todd.
Quek Joo Yee
Honours Student (AY24/25)
Joo Yee will be joining the lab in Aug 2024 to work on animal colour patterns.
Ruth Ang
Honours Student (AY24/25)
Ruth will be joining the lab in Aug 2024 to work on the courtship behaviour of cockatoos.
Chloe Chang
UROPS Student (AY24/25)
Chloe will be joining the lab in Aug 2024 to work on using humans as proxies for predators in visual experiments.
Past Members
Genevieve Fong
Honours Student (AY23/24)
Gen studied the effects of a new type of enrichment on the behaviour and spatial use of tree kangaroos.
She is deeply passionate about the welfare of animals, particularly those under human care, and went on to do a PhD in NUS after graduating from the lab.
Kate-Lyn Teo
Honours Student (AY23/24)
Kate-Lyn investigated how different butterfly wing colours affected the predation rates they experienced in the forests of Singapore.
She is an eloquent writer with a flair for science communication and is interested in animal behaviour and conservation.
Lim Huile
UROPS Student (AY22/23)
Huile was co-supervised by Prof Antonia Monteiro, and worked on aposematic signals on the wings of common mormon butterflies.
She has published this work – her first paper – in the journal Insects. Well done Huile!
Tan Yu Ying (Sheree)
Honours Student (AY21/22)
Sheree was co-supervised by Prof Antonia Monteiro, and worked on the function of the green colour on the wings of banded swallowtail butterflies. She is passionate about science communication.
